This endeavor by Melbourne Water addresses the escalating water demand in Greater Melbourne’s northern and western suburbs while facilitating future development. The project’s technical intricacies involve the construction of a 20km pipeline, connecting the Yan Yean Water Treatment Plant to the Bald Hill tank site in Kalkallo. 

The primary objective of this pipeline is to enhance water supply reliability in the northern suburbs while creating additional capacity for water transfer to the western suburbs. Construction activities commenced in early 2023 and are anticipated to extend into 2024. 

A notable feature of this project is its exclusive focus on bulk water transfer, precluding any property connections along the pipeline’s alignment. This restriction underscores the critical nature of this infrastructure, primarily designed to augment water distribution and cater to the evolving needs of Melbourne’s expanding population.
