Acland Street Terminus Upgrade
Touch Projects played a key part in the entire lifecycle of this project, encompassing project scoping, business case development, design development, obtaining approvals, conducting procurement, and construction delivery.
The Acland Street terminus upgrade presented numerous challenges to the project team, given that Acland Street precinct contains so many cafés and restaurants with on-street dining, multiple other small businesses, council services, and a dynamic streetscape combined with a complex array of below-ground services.
This landmark project was designed and delivered whilst carefully dealing with a very sensitive and vocal community. Local community and stakeholder engagement proved to be a delicate and challenging task, especially given the broad range of stakeholders involved on the project.
Business traders, local residents, landlords, utility service authorities, community groups and the council itself all stipulated competing functional and amenity requirements that ultimately combined to influence the project’s end design, construction methodology, budget and schedule.
Despite the differing viewpoints that this project brought to light, a final design was agreed upon that addressed the community, local business, council and tram operational requirements. Many residents, businesses and other groups were impacted by the construction works, however, given the intense planning leading up to the works, coupled with strong community engagement, disruptions were able to be minimised.
The Acland Street tram terminus upgrade project has seen Public Transport Victoria partnering with Yarra Trams, the City of Port Phillip and VicRoads to deliver a terminus and streetscape upgrade that has greatly improved amenity along this popular strip.
