Goldfields Superpipe

A pivotal $12.3 million infrastructure project, the Goldfields Superpipe aimed to bolster water supply reliability for the Goldfields region. It comprised pump stations, break tanks, a mini hydro-electric plant, and connections to the White Swan water treatment plant. Precise coordination by the team was critical in meeting the tight delivery timeline.

One key component of the Goldfields Superpipe project was the construction of three strategically located pump stations and associated break tanks to ensure consistent water pressure and flow along the pipeline.

A mini hydro-electric plant was also developed at the pipeline’s end point to leverage water flow for sustainable energy generation. An innovative aspect of this project, essentially the plant seeks to harness the kinetic energy from water flow to generate renewable electricity, thereby resulting in energy efficiency.

Direct connections were installed from the pipeline to the White Swan water treatment plant, providing a more resilient and adaptable system with the flexibility to bypass the White Swan Reservoir when necessary.

This component posed significant challenges, necessitating a brief shutdown period for the plant, during which onsite welding of steel pipe elements, as well as the installation and commissioning of actuated valves and control systems, were conducted.

Characterised by its tight timeline, this project required precise coordination and meticulous planning in order to minimise water supply disruption.

It also necessitated synchronised coordination across multiple teams and precise programming to meet scheduled deadlines. As such, advanced planning and construction scheduling techniques, rigorous quality control and continuous stakeholder engagement were pivotal to ensure all tasks were completed on time.

Emphasising sustainable practices and environmentally friendly solutions, the Goldfields Superpipe project successfully enhanced water system infrastructure for the Goldfields region, safeguarding reliability of water supply to the region for years to come.
