Grace of Mary Cypriot Elderly Hostel

The refurbishment was completed under Touch Projects' stewardship, and exemplified the centre’s dedication to enhancing the quality of life for residents.

This multi-faceted project encompassed both the physical and emotional aspects of care. At its core was the refurbishment of the facility, involving an investment of less than $1 million. The focus was on creating an environment that felt like a home away from home for residents. Spacious single rooms with dedicated ensuites provide comfort and privacy, and courtyards with fruit trees encourage interaction and family gatherings. The hostel uses a cultural and religious approach with traditional Greek meals prepared onsite by Greek cooks, ensuring residents enjoy culturally specific foods, fostering a sense of familiarity and comfort.

The project extended beyond the physical environment. It incorporated a person-centered care approach, emphasising regular, detailed communication among all those involved in residents’ care, including the residents themselves. This holistic approach aims to support residents’ physical and emotional wellbeing. 

The refurbishment incorporated functional spaces for the team of nurses, care staff and specialised clinicians who offer a range of services from physiotherapy to palliative care. The emphasis is on individualised care, ensuring each resident’s unique needs are met.

The project’s success lies not only in the physical enhancements, but also in its dedication to maintaining the cultural traditions and belief systems of the Greek residents. This approach helps reduce the apprehension often associated with transitioning to an aged care home.
