WTP 5W Nutrient Removal Plant
Touch Projects provided project scheduling for the initiative, which comprised the planning and construction of the new 5W Nutrient Removal Plant to replace the 55E Activated Sludge Plant (ASP), built in 2001.
The primary objective was to ensure adherence to strict ammonia effluent discharge license limits and achieves the nitrogen load target for Port Philip Bay at its Western Treatment Plant. The upgrade also aimed to bolster the facility’s capacity to handle surging influent flow and loads, anticipated due to both historical trends and anticipated population growth. Safety for operations and maintenance teams is now also enhanced, helping workers avoid high risk activities. The new plant also contributes to lower costs and increased energy efficiencies through improved treatment technology, such as the short cut nitrogen removal process.
Providing project scheduling services, Touch Projects successfully orchestrated the intricate timelines and resource allocations to execute this critical upgrade. Our detailed scheduling accounted for every facet of the upgrade, from procurement to construction activities and compliance milestones.
In a project of this size, effective resource management is critical. Personnel, equipment and materials must be judiciously allocated to ensure that each step proceeds smoothly and according to schedule. With numerous interdependent tasks, task scheduling must also be designed in the most logical sequence in order to maximise efficiency and prevent ripple-effect delays.
Identifying and mitigating risks is a continual process in complex projects. During scheduling, we evaluate potential delays or compliance issues and develop strategies to address these. Effective communication among stakeholders is also vital, facilitated through regular progress updates and coordination to ensure all parties are aligned with project objectives.
The 5W NRP is an excellent example of Melbourne Water’s commitment to environmental responsibility and sustainable wastewater management. Touch Project’s role highlights the necessity of meticulous planning and coordination for a project of this scale and significance.
